FAQs

Your Questions Answered…

What are my options to replace missing teeth?

Modern restorative dentistry includes several options to replace missing teeth. These include bridges, partials, dentures, and dental implants. Dr. Poss uses only the finest restorative materials and will often recommend all-porcelain restorations for an attractive, functional solution. At your new patient exam, Dr. Poss will evaluate your oral health to determine which options are best for you. We offer a variety of solutions at our office, and Dr. Poss has advanced training in dental implant placement, as well as other modern restorative techniques, so you can receive 100% of your care from a dentist you know and trust.

Can you replace my metal crowns and fillings?

Absolutely. As a mercury-free and metal-free dental practice, we use only safe, tooth-colored restorations to restore teeth to their original form and function. Current metal fillings and crowns can be replaced with conservative tooth-colored fillings, porcelain crowns, or porcelain inlays and onlays. Our conservative restorations can be placed without having to remove excess tooth structure, which is often required with traditional crowns.

Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?

Dr. Poss examines your tooth enamel prior to whitening your teeth to ensure the procedure is safe for you. If your teeth are free of cracks and decay, we’ll use a safe and effective whitening gel, which gently breaks apart staining compounds without damaging the tooth enamel. The teeth whitening systems we use also contain ingredients – like fluoride – that help strengthen tooth enamel. Some minor sensitivity usually accompanies whitening, but this will subside within a few days and does not indicate that the enamel has been damaged.

Can the doctor help with chronic headaches?

Chronic headaches are often related to an underlying condition known as TMJ dysfunction. When the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are out of alignment, the muscles of the face and jaw have to work harder, creating muscle tension and chronic headaches. As a neuromuscular dentist who regularly lectures at the leading school for neuromuscular dentistry – LVI – Dr. Poss offers effective treatments to alleviate headaches and correct TMJ dysfunction.

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is an extremely common affliction. It can result from a variety of factors. The most common cause is teeth grinding, or bruxism, which often occurs at night. Many patients are unaware they grind their teeth during their sleep. A custom-made nightguard can alleviate teeth grinding and prevent teeth from cracking or breaking over time. Other causes of tooth sensitivity include tooth decay, fractures, and gum recession. Visit Dr. Poss for an evaluation – tooth sensitivity can often be eliminated with simple therapies or adjustments in home hygiene habits.

Are there any alternatives to gum surgery?

When gum disease reaches an advanced state, surgery can be an effective procedure. However, many patients are apprehensive to receive dental surgery and will even avoid dental visits as the result. Laser treatment for gum disease is becoming a popular alternative. This no-cut, no-sew therapy results in faster healing and shortened appointments. Ask Dr. Poss if you’re a candidate for laser gum therapy.
